Event Description: Join Scottish Sikhs to celebrate the 550th anniversary of the birth of the Founder of the Sikh Religion.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s message to humanity was:
Pray and meditate on God’s name.
Earn a living by honest means whilst remembering God.
Share your earnings.
Recognize the Oneness of God and the unity of humankind.
Is this message relevant today as it was in the 15th century?
Guru Nanak Dev Ji also advocated that “Truth is high but higher still is truthful living”.
What is truthful living?
Is it achievable?
How can we start to live truthfully?
An interactive discussion-led event showcasing Scottish Sikh projects based on the Universal Message of the Sikh faith of global service.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Universal Message is to recognise the humanity in all and embed the life values of Naam Japo, Kirat Karo and Vand Shako: to pray, work hard and to share.
This event will be hosted by Charandeep Singh, Director, Sikhs in Scotland and will feature a Keynote Speech from Ravinder Kaur Nijjar, Chair of Religions for Peace UK Women of Faith Network and the Sikh Representative on the Scottish Religious Leaders Forum.
The interactive discussion-led event will showcase the practical way Scottish Sikhs are living the Sikh values and helping local and international communities.
The panel discussion will feature lead volunteers from Seva Scotland, Sikh Council of Scotland and youth educators.
SEVA Scotland provides hot meals to the needy in Glasgow and is entirely volunteer-run. SEVA Scotland operate two kitchens a week, preparing meals in Gurdwaras and transport it to the City Centre. A similar concept runs in Edinburgh called Guru Nanak's Free Kitchen and also in England.
Sikh Council of Scotland is an international development charity, specifically focused on lifting the living conditions and economic opportunities of the forgotten communities in India. Their work supports education scholarships, business support, women's empowerment and skills training. The Council support local projects from time to time such as raising £8,000 for the Yorkhill Children's Hospital.
Refreshments will be available at the event and tours of the Central Gurdwara can be requested.
