Event Description: Join us for a day of gentle, transformative Healing Qigong to activate the innate self-healing power of your body and natural self-regulating power of your mind, so leaving you refreshed, restored and more ‘at one’ within yourself.
The origins of Chinese healing arts take us back to Ancient China, where they mysteriously emerged out of the mists of time at least 5000 years ago. Born out of Taoist philosophy, Qigong (formerly known as DaoYin) developed from the same principles that gave Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nutrition and Acupuncture to the world. All four were considered integral to the ’art’ of nourishing life and nurturing spirit, in other words, the practice of nurturing and healing the body and mind to live out a healthy, balanced and productive life. In Chinese philosophy, mind cannot be separated from heart and body. If there is disorder in one, all will become depleted and exhausted, and result in stress, ill health and even early death. In today’s world, living a truly balanced and stress-free life seems close to impossible, so our need for holistic, restorative solutions is perhaps greater than ever. Qigong stimulates and nourishes the meridians, or energy channels, of our body, along with the tendons, bones, vital organs and brain. More recently, it has been said that it even invigorates stem cells. As such it acts like fuel for both body and mind, and offers a blueprint to minimise and even cure illness, reduce stress, quieten the mind, balance emotions and repair and strengthen the body. If you are injured with whiplash in China today, you are as likely to be directed to practise specific forms of Qigong or Taiji, as you are to be sent off to any other hospital department. Qigong is very much a ‘living art’.
There are many forms of Qigong, with diverse purposes and outcomes. However, in this workshop we will focus on short, gentle, readily remembered sequences of stillness and movement, breath and sound. We will aim, by the end of the day, to have practised qigong for relaxation, emotional balance, health and wellbeing. We will also include specific qigong to improve eyesight and counteract over-long periods in front of a computer screen, self massage to stimulate natural healing and release physical or emotional blockages, and meditative qigong to restore harmony between mind, body and spirit.
The practices will be suitable for both beginners and those with previous experience. Like water, Qi (life force energy) responds to its environment, so each will draw from the practices according to their own needs and previous experience.
Muriel began her study of Taoist practices 31 years ago when living and working in China, and was introduced to additional meditation and healing practices in India, Egypt and the Philippines. To add a western perspective to her understanding, she further explored the Science of Consciousness as taught by the Monro Institute, USA, and the International Academy for Conscientology , London. However, Taoist practice and study remained her primary focus, and during this time she became a Universal Healing Tao Instructor in Qigong, Taiji and Meditation, and a practitioner of Chi Nei Tsang and Tuina therapies, which follow the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Over the last 9 years, Muriel has undertaken intensive study in Damo-Qigong and Taoist Internal Alchemy in the sacred mountain of Wudang, China, under the guidance of her teacher, Master Hu Xuezhi. She spends several months in China each year, and assists Master Hu on his annual Damo-Qigong and Wudang Internal Alchemy retreat programme, and is currently the only instructor he has authorised to teach the programme outside Asia. A faculty member of Wudang Taoist Internal Alchemy and Damo-Qigong, Muriel is also a member of the Healing Tao Association of North America, and the World Universal healing Tao Faculty, Thailand. Muriel has taught in a number of countries over the last 12 years.
